A short and simple explanation of how shock absorbers work for the motorcycle

Shock absorbers or motorcycle suspensions are responsible for absorbing impacts and adequately and comfortably overcome the irregularities of the terrain where we are rolling. The suspensions also play an important role in the stability, road holding and control of the motorcycle.

The suspensions receive this name because they have the chassis or body of the motorcycle suspended over the wheels and their function is to maintain the stability of the motorcycle when braking or stopping, providing safety. Both the front and rear suspensions are made up of a spring that cushions when the weight of the motorcycle goes down, a shock absorber that retains the rise when the spring is stretched again so that the upward movement with respect to the wheels is progressive and not all at once. When braking, the weight is transferred to the front wheel, and when accelerating it does so on the rear wheel, in this way the whole unit can go up and down to compensate for those forces and maintain control.

The suspension of the motorcycle is composed of:

Fork:

It connects the front wheel with the steering and the chassis, it has a built-in suspension and the front brake, allowing the vertical axis of the front wheel to rotate to change the direction of the bike when cornering.

Telescopes:

It is made up of two tubes, which in turn consist of two parts, one that is inserted into the other. The wheel is fixed between the tubes.

Oscillating arm or scissors:

In this metallic piece, it goes on the rear shock absorber.

Shock absorbers:

Hydraulic or gas shock absorbers are used on the rear suspensions.

Rims:

It is the fundamental piece in the motorcycle for its movement and advancement.

The complete suspension system is divided into front and rear suspension.

Front suspension.

The fork:

It contains the suspension medium between the front wheel and the chassis.

Telescopic suspension:

They slow down the extension of the coil spring, when the spring tries to extend after being compressed, the springs resist this.

Front Wheel:

The primary function of the wheels is to transmit power from the engine in the form of rotary motion.

Rear suspension.

Scissor swing arm type damping is widely used for the rear suspension of motorcycles, where the swing arm is provided with shock absorbers mounted between the chassis and the swing arm.
